Fractal Thinking Framework
Every organization decides before it acts, and it decides with a system.
It always exists, even when no one has designed it.
Does any of this happen in your organization?
- 01Coordinating across areas takes constant intervention.
- 02Some results depend too heavily on particular people.
- 03Every area can meet its targets and still the result as a whole does not improve.
- 04The same problems come back, even after they have been dealt with.
- 05Delivering for customers takes extraordinary effort that ends up becoming routine.
- 06Growing takes more and more direct intervention from the top.
- 07Capable people make reasonable decisions from different criteria, and the whole loses coherence.
Different situations can share a single origin: the way the organization is configured to decide and to act.
Performance begins long before results.
Capabilities delimit what can be decided. Decisions produce actions. Actions produce results. Results sustained over time show up as performance.
But the process does not end there. Results generate learning. That learning can develop new capabilities, widen what can be decided, and raise the performance the organization is able to sustain.
When capabilities evolve, the space of possible performance expands with them.
Capabilities enter the cycle from outside and delimit what can be decided. The upper planes are the performance the organization could sustain: the space opens out as capabilities evolve.
Every structure has a limit to what it can hold. So does an organization.
The capabilities from which an organization decides delimit the space of performance it can sustain. The edge of that space is its limit.
That limit is rarely visible in itself. It appears when holding a higher level of performance starts to require extraordinary effort, constant intervention, or compensations that end up becoming routine.
A · Improving within the limit
The organization improves, reaches the limit and tries to go past it. It can, for a while — but the new level does not hold.
B · Moving the limit
When the capabilities from which the organization decides evolve, the limit moves and a new space of sustainable performance opens.
Improvement raises performance within the present limits. Evolution widens the limits of what the organization can sustain.
Unveiling the Blind Spot of Modern Management
There are organizations that improve, grow and deliver, and still run into a limit their usual tools cannot quite account for.
This piece starts from that paradox in order to look somewhere else: not only at what the organization does, but at the logic from which it decides what to do.
From there it introduces a distinction that is fundamental to the Fractal Thinking Framework: visible results are the manifestation of a less visible architecture of capabilities, criteria and decisions. Making that architecture observable is what allows one to understand why certain improvements do not hold, and opens the possibility of intervening in what conditions performance.
It is a way into FTF: into the problem it sets out to make visible, and into a different way of observing the organization.
This framework explains and orients. Taking it into a particular organization means intervening in the system, developing its capabilities and accompanying its evolution.
That is the work Helement does alongside each organization.
